Hi! I’m Zack Sheppard.

My Focus

I’m a full-time freelance senior engineer, helping teams realize their potential and complete their projects. If you have need for someone with my experience, send me an email.

Additionally, I’m working on building tools and code to improve the open-source community and the closed-source developer experience.

Programming Languages & Tools

I focus on front-end web and iOS work. I’m an expert in Swift, Typescript, and React. I also have extensive experience with AWS, Objective-C, HTML CSS, and really most ways you can build a webapp. (Except Ruby, sorry.)

Addition Wealth

2021 - Present

I was initially brought on as a freelance advisor to help shape the initial build for Addition Wealth&rquo;s first prototype.

I helped craft our product process, shape the features we chose to develop, and lead a team of contractor engineers during the initial product build. Since then, I’ve stayed on the team to help them grow the product and team into a stable company. I currently work with the company on a long-term contract as the founding architect and lead engineer.

Freelance Work

2018 - Present

I’m an experienced engineer, manager, consultant, and mentor. Some of my featured clients include:

Fi

I’ve worked closely with the Fi Dog Collars team for years, helping build and launch multiple iterations of their marketing and store websites. Through our repeated work together, we’ve developed a rapport and pattern for working quickly and iteratively to help shape designs into beautiful sites.

OrbitCME

I was brought on by OrbitCME as their sole iOS app engineer. Their founder wanted to develop an app quickly to validate the market for it. Working closely with him and two other engineers on the server, we were able to complete and launch the OrbitCME iOS app on a very tight schedule.

Cred.ai

I worked as a supporting engineer for the Cred iOS App team for over two years. As a senior engineer with experience building sensitive, secure, and stable apps for millions of users, I’ve been able to help them build a stronger app with the kind of UI polish they aimed for.

Candid™

I was contracted to help the Candid mobile and web development team. There, I acted as a consultant and mentor, helping train more junior engineers in managing a public app, consulting on design decisions, and implementing key features on tight deadlines.

Past Experience

This is just my highlight reel. For details, check out my LinkedIn.

Foursquare

2011-2018

I worked for 7 years at Foursquare. Starting as a new grad hire on the API/Server team, then moving to the web team, and finally landing on the iOS team, I would move wherever there was a need for someone to learn a stack and execute quickly.

Once I landed on the iOS team, I worked hard to learn and grow. Eventually I became the iOS platform lead in the company, then the manager the Swarm mobile app team, and finally the manager for all the engineers for our consumer apps.

Google

2009-2011

For two summers while in college, I interned at Google on their search infrastructure team and Google Sheets team. If you’ve ever Googled for a PDF or Office document, or used the “Paint Format” feature in Google Sheets, those were my projects.

Williams College and Columbia University

2006-2011

I’ve been programming in BASIC, Java, and HTML since 1998, but I started learning formal computer science while in high school, taking classes at Williams College.

After high school, I attended Columbia University . There, I completed a BA in computer science (while also acting in a lot of theatre).
